You can provide a homey setting for your loved one in surprising easy ways. Remember, the idea is to provide continuous clues to generate a multi-sensory environment that provides reassurance that the patient is safe – all level one needs have been met.
Baking
· Chocolate chip cookies are always a hit!
· Bread in a breadmaker (it’s super easy and that amazing smell must mean you are someplace good, right?!)
Home-related props
· Laundry baskets with clean towels
· Photo albums
· Wedding mementos (dresses, veils, accessories)
· Baby items (cribs, toys, books, etc)
· A gentleman’s briefcase or hat and tie
Soft music from an era that appeals to the individual’s generation and taste
Individuals providing care should dress is everyday clothing, NOT scrubs. DO not send signals that there is something "wrong" with the patient. A clinical setting provides all the wrong cues.
Remember – the nature of dementia is that it is unfixed and often turbulent. You may need to repeat these steps everyday, or several times throughout the day to help your loved one feel at ease.
